After the coronavirus, schools all around the world started switching to online classes. Even before the pandemic, there were a lot of people already recognizing the benefits of the online classroom and when the corona crisis began, more people were convinced of the many benefits of learning online.
The first reason I would like to mention is that online learning is incredibly flexible. Students are usually able to choose their own study times. Not only that but online learning also allows you to study at your own pace. This is extremely beneficial for students of different levels and with different needs. Comparing this with traditional schools, it's quite clear that online learning takes the lead here. Maybe at least one day per week or month you just... [Read more]

Student feedback and correction are an integral part of our teaching methodology. In this blog post, we introduce some general concepts.
Many teachers either neglect giving appropriate feedback or they are not sure how to do so. In this blog I'm going to share some opinions and some data so that you can think about it and maybe implement some strategies of giving effective feedback. Our students actually need it and the whole learning process is aimed at getting some feedback.
When you start thinking about your feedback and thinking about the whole concept of giving feedback you have to consider what effective feedback actually is. In general, is it correcting all students’ mistakes, or is it just discussing some target language? For... [Read more]

What are ice breakers and when and where do we use them? In this blog post, we will cover these issues and give actual examples of activities you can use with your classes.
Icebreakers are games or activities that are designed to ‘break the ice’. Typically you would use these kinds of games or activities at the beginning of a new school year, when you have a new set of students, or a new class that you don't know and they don't know you. You also can use icebreakers to get your students going at the start of the lesson speaking in English and that's really important as you don't want to come into the classroom and say, “Open your books to page five” and then start studying.
Often your classroom may be the only place where they are... [Read more]

Two years ago, I found myself in a remote village deep into the Himalayan Mountains in northern India. I had traveled there with the intention of volunteering in a daycare center in a Thibetan village. When I got there, I was informed that the daycare did not need help, but would I be willing to teach English to the monastery's young monks? I was very nervous at first, as I had no experience with this! Seeing their need, however, I reluctantly agreed. So I spent the next three months teaching what I could, however I could, albeit in a very disjointed and unknowledgeable way.

I started teaching online two years ago. With no training, it was a bumpy start. If there is one thing I want you to take away from this post, it’s this: relax. It gets better.
Be ok with not being great when you start. Teaching is a craft. No amount of school can fully prepare you to teach. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t study before you start teaching. Studying can help you be better equipped when you do start. But there is an intuition you have to develop when you begin teaching. You will learn with practice how to connect with your students, how to identify what areas they are struggling with, and how to best teach different concepts. Odds are, your first classes are going to be rough. Go into it with the mentality that you... [Read more]

One of the most daunting things about teaching online is setting up your online classroom. You have to set up the lighting, buy props, make sure the camera is at the right angle, and find a suitable headset. It can be expensive and overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Here is what I’ve learned about setting up a cheap, organized online classroom.
Whiteboards are your best friends. They are the most versatile prop you can buy. You can use them to teach students how to read, draw a concept your students don’t understand, write a sentence such as “I don’t ____ running,” and get them to fill in the blank, and even play Pictionary.
