During the second half of my undergraduate career, I had the opportunity to serve as an English Language Assistant (LA) at the English Language Institute (ELI) at my alma mater, the University of Florida. In this role, I worked with another LA and one faculty member (often a Linguistics professor) in leading a class of roughly 15 students every semester. One of the first pieces of information the first professor I worked with gave me was on the importance of assessments at the ELI. Students at the ELI were placed in classes based on their proficiency level in the language, which included evaluations in speaking, listening, reading and writing. The most beginner level students started at level 10 and the most advanced students graduated from the ELI once... [Read more]

As an aspirant teaching English to Chinese children, I chose ‘Pronunciation problems of Chinese people’ as the most attractive and the most useful topic for my summative task at this moment.
As resources of this joyful and useful research on the internet, I have used three videos on Youtube made by the three experienced teachers of the English language. Only one of them works with children. And only one of them (accent coach from London, Luke Nicholson) gave a lot of live examples of the flaws in pronunciation that Chinese people, in general, make when speaking English, by showing the interviews with the Chinese actor Jackie Chan who sometimes manages to confuse his experienced interviewers.

English is the language of the modern world. All people around the world know the English language importance in our life, because we need it in our work and sometimes when we meet other people from other cultures, maybe they are not from Britain or America but we almost think they are talking English.

Players stand in a circle, with one player in the middle. Each player in the circle has a picture or word flashcard. Call out two of the picture card items. The two players holding these cards have to change places without the person in the middle taking one of their spots in the circle. When the person in the middle succeeds in taking a place in the circle, the other player hands over his or her card and takes a turn in the middle. At any time you can call out "All change!" and this means that everyone has to change places. Use this if you see someone is getting stuck in the middle.

As an EFL teacher in Vientiane, Laos, I have seen that Lao speakers have unique challenges with learning English. Some of these challenges are due to linguistic differences between Lao and English, while others are due to cultural differences between Laos and the Western countries where English is spoken. In this paper, I reflect on how I can help my Lao students overcome their particular issues with pronunciation, intonation, and stress.

“Teacher”, this word is linked with everyone’s life in a very sensitive and special way. Have you ever observed a child who has just started his/her school life? If you have, you will see that the child follows his/her teacher blindly. The very common reply a parent gets when they try to teach their child some new math technique or holding the pencil etc. is “No, my teacher showed me this way.” At home, they often start speaking the way (I would not say imitate) their teacher speaks with them. They admire them so much that they never stop talking about them after returning home. And a common role-play game we all play during our childhood is being a teacher. So, it’s quite understood how important teachers are in our life. The innocent... [Read more]

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, pronunciation is “how words are pronounced. Pronunciation can be an intimidating prospect for English language learners, especially since English phonetics and phonology hardly seem consistent. The difficulty of English pronunciation should not be underestimated as speaking is a vital component of language learning. Confidence in this skill can be closely linked to students' accuracy and fluency. Therefore, a teacher should understand the basics of phonology and phonetics to help build students' confidence in their speaking skills.

Effective classroom management broadly refers to the overall success of the lessons you are teaching. For a class to run effectively, the teacher must establish the skills required to provide a clear, controlled and inspiring lesson. This includes managing all stages of each lesson, and dealing with any problem behavior should it arise. Classroom management is vital to sustaining meaningful academic learning. A chaotic classroom will not only negatively impact a student’s ability and motivation to learn, but it will also increase teacher stress and the formation of negative student-teacher relationships.

The parent’s role in education is important because the root of the development of every human started in the family. It is important for our society that parents be the primary role models for their children because children can easily be inspired by what their parents do. When parents become involved in their children’s education, the teacher can focus more on the educational content, and teachers, parents, and students can work together to help the students to succeed. From birth to adulthood, education can come from a mixture of different sources of influence, such as family, school, church, neighborhood, and social media.
