There are multiple examples for specific regions of this world. In this assessment, I would like to focus on China. Mandarin is the main language, within which there are multiple dialects. In a way, I can see a similarity between the English language and that of China. ITTT offers a wide variety of Online TEFL Courses and a great number of opportunities for English Teachers and for Teachers of English as a Second Language. Motivation among the students is arguably just as important for a successful ESL (English as a Second Language) lesson as the content and teaching methodologies. It has been defined as a theoretical construct used to explain the initiation, direction, intensity, persistence, and quality of behaviour, especially goal-directed behaviour (Murphy and Alexander, 2000). It...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Should teachers punish students for bad behavior? In my psychology class at university, we learned that there are many ways to curve or modify behavior, one method involves 2 different types of punishment. When we think of punishment in a classroom we typically think back to corporal punishment, which would be classified as Positive Punishment (when something is added to diminish behavior). This is quite frankly unacceptable in a classroom. This can have a great and direct psychological effect on the student's motivation to learn a language. Even if the behavior is not related to language learning, a student might subconsciously relate the punishment with learning English. There are far better ways to improve behavior in a classroom other than...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Evaluation and testing are important components for the teacher, students, and the teaching of ESL/EFL courses. These two tasks are both ways of measuring personal achievement about the progression of the course being taught. Without testing, it would be much more difficult for teachers to gauge their students’ progression in the course and would likely prevent students from earning certifications in the English language. If evaluations are not conducted the teacher may be oblivious to their deficiencies in their teaching methods. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Ryan R. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Evaluation as described in Unit 15 of ITTT’s TEFL/TESOL...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Most if not all courses make use of materials, regardless of the topic being taught. In ESL courses materials are crucial to the learning processes from the beginning to the end of a student’s education in English. Whether the materials used are authentic, non-authentic, realia, or media, they aid the students by testing, reinforcing, and improving the learner’s knowledge. Course materials also provide learners with a reference other than the instructor in the case of dictionaries and other reference materials. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Ryan R. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas I have been teaching English to young learners in China for almost a year and I tried to make my lessons with and without flashcards. And I can say for sure, that it’s really hard to teach children (3-12 years old) if you don’t have prepared flashcards for your classes, but only an interactive whiteboard and some stuff to play games. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Kelly P. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas I am a teacher in a training center for young learners in China, Beijing. Our school has a praise system, to be more precise our school has its own money that students can use to buy some toys from our school’s shop. To get this money students should listen to the teacher, do their homework, and pass the tests. The teachers can give them money even for each lesson if they want. And it is really useful to maintain discipline in the classroom. It’s the first reason why we should praise the students. The second reason is that if you praise the students it increases their self-esteem and they are more likely to enjoy their course and be motivated during it. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas First of all, I notice that adults have a bigger focus on what the teacher is saying and doing during the lesson, than the kids or teenagers. It is because, in my opinion, adults realize why they need to study English. For example, they will be able to find a better job or they may get an enhancement. So they know it is one of the important goals for them for a particular period of their life. And speaking about kids, they are too young first of all. They do not have a clue what is a goal and why they need it. The only thing they know is that their parents want them to study well, but it’s not enough in a lot of cases. And sometimes the kids don’t even speak their language well yet, but they need to learn English. They are full of energy all the time...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Increasing student motivation in the classroom is closely tied to student-teacher rapport. Throughout my career as a classroom teacher and lacrosse coach, I have found that students perform better for teachers they “like”. I use quotations on the word “like” because I believe it is a student’s way of expressing a strong relationship built on trust and respect with their teacher. Students will also perform better in classes they “like” as well. In this sense, I believe students are attempting to explain that the class they “like” is engaging and relevant to them. As a high school and middle school lacrosse coach, I have had the unique opportunity to talk with my players about their academic lives in a casual and low-stress...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Stories are universal. They have existed in every culture and every period is known to modern man. From Neolithic cave art to Homer and from Virgil to Dostoevsky, humanity has been enthralled with stories. The most successful speakers constantly engage in bard-like tale-bearing, and, oftentimes, the songs that most resonate with listeners follow a story arch—albeit loosely. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Ryan S. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas One of the most frustrating things about learning a second language is how naturally your first language came to you and how unnaturally your second one seems to! Why can’t we just listen to the language for a while and eventually just “get it” as we did as kids? All of the conjugation patterns and inflections and grammatical oddities of a new language are sometimes hard to grasp even for experienced learners. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas The Engage, Study, Active (ESA) method is a combination of different methods. It was created by Jeremy Harmer when he wrote the book called “How to Teach English” in 1998. In this book, he gives an overview of the different methodologies such as Task-Based Learning, Community Language Learning, and Suggestopedia. He then describes a new methodology: ESA. This method has three main parts that are utilized in different ways to create three distinct ESA lessons discussed below. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Kelly H. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Ryan A. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. It is quite unfortunate that travellers from the United States often have a bad reputation for being loud, inconsiderate, and oblivious. Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences There are a variety of reasons why students may or may not be motivated to learn English. For many teachers, especially teachers who are just beginning their English teaching careers, a lack of motivation in their students is one of the biggest obstacles that they face [1]. Luckily, there are many methods for cultivating motivation in English language students. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Ryan L. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. One of the reasons a student might have a lack of motivation is that they are daunted by how far they seem to be from ever achieving fluency. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Teaching does not begin or end in the classroom. Because of that, teachers admittedly need help in developing a child’s level of knowledge. The biggest ally or obstacle to an instructor is a child’s parents. While a supportive parent can help reinforce the work that a teacher is doing, negative influence by a parent, and hinder a child’s learning just as much. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Derek G. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Linda Dunsmore Teaching Ideas It is important to establish rapport with students within a classroom for a variety of reasons, it builds trust between students and teacher, insights confidence in students and allows for a fun learning environment. All aspects of teaching require a teacher to have some sort of rapport with students. Students will retain more information and do better in classes when the teacher is engaged and shows love for their job as well as an interest in their students. Most students will not learn well from a teacher who comes to class, does not greet the students let alone knows their names and just reads through the lesson without showing any interest whatsoever. Another positive point is that games can be used at any moment in the teaching process by any level.
