Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences As both an individual tutor and group teacher of High Beginning Conversational English for the ESL division of Literacy New Jersey, I have become familiar with the benefits and drawbacks of volunteer teaching. While the drawbacks can be challenging, the rewards of volunteer teaching far outweigh any drawbacks that I have encountered. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Charles M. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Currently, my tutoring includes students from West Africa and Israel. My High Beginning Conversational English class has students from around the globe including Guatemala, Venezuela, Israel, Liberia and more. This makes for a diverse group of learners and...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences China is an incredibly popular country for English teachers. Teaching in China is in high-demand, and there are many perks to working in such a large country. Options include teaching children and adults privately, as well as becoming an instructor in public schools. If an English teacher decides to teach at a university in China, there are key considerations to learn about before making the move. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Priscila E. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. At most public universities in China, public funding will limit the pay and resources available to English teachers. Wages are often less than private options, as well as funding for supplies....  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences "Doing nothing for others is the undoing of ourselves." - Horace Mann Volunteering is one of the most satisfying human experiences. It gives one a feeling of relevance, of giving freely to those whose live those skills one has will be of an immense benefit too. A volunteer has been defined by the Business Dictionary as a person that that actively takes on a task, responsibility, or project on his or her own accord without needing to be assigned, ordered, or told to do so. Often a volunteer is not paid for the work that they provide. For example, a volunteer may desire to work at a company's charitable events with or without pay and may even request to do so without being asked or told to. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas There are always struggles and problems with learners of English as a foreign language in different countries. Cambodia is no exception. The Cambodian educational system has undergone many changes in its history. The Pol Pot genocidal regime between 1975-1979 forced the educational system of the nation to collapse. After a long prohibition of the English language and the end of the cold war, the government and people of Cambodia chose the English language to be the second language to communicate and do business. In 1986 the ban from teaching English was lifted. Since it is such a relatively new language in the everyday educational system, learners of English can have problems understanding and learning the language. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas One of the greatest problems any teacher may face when instructing English is institutional. That is to say, the school the teacher is teaching at may not have the resources or the care to fully fund or supply the teacher with the necessary tools to instruct students. This can be a huge problem, as if the teacher starts from a disadvantaged position, they may feel like there is little hope for them to equip students for English learning. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Colin R. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. However, a lack of funding is not the end of the world. In fact, a teacher does not need anything except a passion for teaching, and a bit of creativity....  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences From 2018 to 2019, I taught two eighth grade English classes in the rural Thies area, experiencing some of the challenges and advantages to teaching students who were just embarking on their language study. I was paired with a long-term Senegalese teacher who walked me through the basics of teaching a foreign language: engaging the class, developing study materials, and creating activities. What stood out to me was his emphasis on showing up as a role model for the students, as well as integrating other modes of learning into the classroom, such as art, singing, and dance activities. Elizaveta Pachina TEFL Information Alumni Experiences Teaching Ideas Urban education can be described as a complicated topic for school reformists in America. With critical issues, such as inadequate funding, lack of resources, and uncertified teachers, the myriad of problems with public education has reached a new high. Many big-city public education systems have turned into melting pots by bringing together members of different racial, social, economic, and ethnic groups. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Crystal H. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Per the Bureau of International Information Programs (2011), the "Incomparable Melting Pot" is a likeness that inferred blending of various social...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences My own teaching experience, though not as extensive as many seasoned teachers, is quite diverse. I have taught English class to middle and high school students in the US public school system, worked for an alternative school for students with behavior problems, taught in a language training school, taught in a bilingual Montessori kindergarten, tutored numerous students one-on-one, and I’ve taught many different kinds of online classes. Currently, I work as a course designer and an actor, filming fun videos to teach Chinese students English through an interactive online app. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Christy N.
