The Importance of Learning Competent Teaching Skills | ITTT | TEFL Blog

Becoming a competent teacher and holding the engagement of a class requires several different skills and techniques to lead a well-structured lesson. Some techniques and styles will differ from teacher to teacher due to personality traits, however, there are also many skills that a teacher must possess to maintain not only the control and flow of the lesson but also the energy and interest of the class as a whole.

Relevant Information

It is important to be able to relay relevant information to the pupils is not only an informative way but also an effective and interesting way. Being confident about your delivery of the tasks during lessons will keep the students on track and motivated in class.

Lesson plans

Structuring effective lesson plans will not only help boost your confidence in class but will also reduce stress and act as a guideline for the times that a lesson does take an unexpected turn due to various circumstances or possibly disruptive students. Using the ESA methodology will allow some movability and retain a teacher’s confidence when leading a lesson.

Keeping the learning fun and interactive is the best tactic for a successful lesson, however, discipline and order are also needed to have a controlled enjoyable lesson. Having and maintaining classroom rules are essential and will drastically improve classroom productivity and enjoyment of not only the students but also yourself as a teacher.

Classroom management

Enforcing rules when needed will allow tasks to get completed in the correct amount of time and allow proper planning for future lessons, creating a positive flow to the ultimate task at hand.

It is also useful to gauge each pupil’s interests and understand their reason for being a part of the class, no matter how small or large. From this understanding, you can focus on certain areas and develop each student’s knowledge and ability individually.

Some students will not require much motivation to focus on certain tasks, where others may need a bit of inspiration to engage and involve themselves within the group. Strategizing tactics to keep all of the students engaged and interested in each task takes some trial and error, but is a talent worth developing.

Being patient with your students is also extremely important.

Understanding that each student will have different abilities, skills and work at different paces, will ultimately keep your lesson flowing correctly (if properly organized). Having a few backups of extra worksheets and/or activities ready for the faster more academic students will allow you the space to assist and focus on the slower and/or struggling students. Being adaptable to each student’s needs is a very important quality to have for any teacher.

The way you deliver the information and task to the class must be relevant to each student’s wants and needs. The student’s awareness of their wants and needs is usually different from your knowledge of their wants and needs.
