As the most populous city in canada and the fourth most populous in the whole of north america, Toronto can certainly claim to be one of the world’s truly great cities. The city is also the capital of the province of Ontario and is at the heart of canadian business, finance, arts and culture. According to dozens of surveys and polls Toronto is consistently rated as one of the most livable cities in the world, which is yet another reason why this multicultural and cosmopolitan city provides the perfect venue for completing a tefl/tesol training course.
The first European settlement in the area was established by the British in the late 18th century. Originally known as York, the city was renamed Toronto in 1834 and it then became the provincial capital in 1867. The city steadily grew in size over the coming decades due to large scale immigration from countries right across Europe and beyond, something that has continued to this day. Toronto is now one of the most diverse cities in the world with around half of its residents having been born outside of the country. This cultural diversity is one reason why the city draws so many visitors from all over the world, year after year.
Visitors to this magnificent city will find plenty of things to keep them busy during the day and through the evenings. The Royal Ontario Museum is one of the biggest and most popular museums in the whole of north america, while the Art Gallery of Ontario houses a very impressive collection of works from around the world. Sport lovers will also feel right at home as the city is represented by several major sports teams including the Toronto Maple Leafs, one of the original and most successful members of the NHL. The most recognizable feature in the city is undoubtedly the CN Tower which is still the tallest freestanding structure in the Western Hemisphere. No trip to Toronto would be complete without taking a trip to the top of the tower to take in the breathtaking views of the city.
Outdoor pursuits are another very popular pastime in and around the city, particularly during the colder months. Winter sees the arrival of several public skating rinks, ice skating trails, cross-country tracks and slopes for skiing and snowboarding. Whether you enjoy winter sports or prefer less energetic pursuits, you are sure to receive a warm welcome from the residents of this delightful city whatever time of year you visit.
